May 2009 - Another one up for the spud.
The potato has been confirmed as a low-carbon food in a government-sponsored (UK) study into greenhouse gases. Potatoes release only about 0.5kg of carbon dioxide for each kg of food. The figures are similar for most other native fruit and vegetables. In contrast, producing 1kg of lamb releases the equivalent of 17kg of CO2, while the same amount of beef releases methane equivalent to 16kg.
Among the vegetables, tomatoes – most of which are grown in heated glasshouses – are the most “ carbon-intensive” one, each kilo generating more than 9kg of CO2.
